When to winterize your boat at Lake of the Ozarks
Plan boat winterization around the first hard freeze, book shop time early and compare the same service scope.
Before you call
Have the boat make, model, engine type and where it is kept. Ask what the winterization includes, whether haul-out, shrink wrap or storage are separate, and how soon they can fit you in.

Water left in an engine, cooling system, ballast tank or plumbing line can freeze, expand and crack parts. The goal is simple: get the water out or protected before the first hard freeze. At the Lake that usually means planning in October, not waiting for the first cold forecast in November.
Work back from the first hard freeze
NOAA climate normals put the typical first 28 degree night for nearby Jefferson City and Springfield in early November, and some years come earlier. That is an average, not a promise. If you still want fall boating, tell the shop and ask for a late October slot. If a hard freeze shows up in the forecast first, treat that as the deadline.
- What dates do you still have open before early November?
- If a freeze is forecast before my appointment, what should I do with the boat?
- Can you winterize in my slip, or does the boat need to come to the shop?
A covered slip is not heated storage
A slip cover or unheated storage building keeps weather off the boat but does not keep it above freezing on the coldest nights. Plan to winterize whether the boat stays in the water, on a lift or goes into storage.
- Is my boat staying on the lift, in the water or going to storage this winter?
- Do you offer storage, or do I need to arrange it separately?
- Will the boat be covered or shrink wrapped, and who does that?
Compare the same scope
Inboards, sterndrives, outboards, towboats with ballast, and boats with heads or freshwater systems need different steps. Ask each business for a written list of what is included so you are comparing the same job. Pairing winterization with any repairs from the season can save a second trip.
- Does the price cover the engine, cooling system, fuel treatment, ballast, plumbing and batteries?
- Is haul-out, transport, shrink wrap or storage included or separate?
- Will you note any problems you find and quote repairs before doing them?
Common questions
Do I need to winterize if my boat stays in a covered slip?
Yes. A cover keeps weather off but does not keep the boat above freezing. Water left in the engine or plumbing can still freeze.
When should I book winterization at the Lake?
Earlier is better. Shops get busy in October and the first hard freeze can come in late October or early November. Book ahead and tell the shop if you still plan to use the boat.
Can Lake Shortlist tell me which shop to use?
No. We list businesses and the questions worth asking. Contact businesses directly, and compare written scopes before you decide.
